DRIVERS IN South Wales had a surprise when over 300 rubber ducks fell out of a van and on to a busy road.

The toys were being taken to a charity duck race event when the doors of the trailer they were being transported in opened, scattering them along a quarter-mile section of the A4042 near Abergavenny, South Wales.

Tony Pugh, 69, a volunteer with Monmouthshire, Brecon and Abergavenny Canals Trust, spent over an hour gathering up the ducks while cars passed by. Police, who were nearby when the accident occurred, stopped to lend a hand.

Phil Hughes, a volunteer manager with the Trust, said: “At one point we thought we would be up before the ‘beak’ due to an insecure load but cross wings, we hope the fantastic police service of Gwent see the funny side of the ‘Great Escape’.”

The race went ahead as planned and raised £1,500 towards the charity’s canal restoration costs.
