Peugeot 2008 updated, electric e-2008 given more range in refresh of French crossover
More electric power and range for e-2008
The current Peugeot 2008 and electric e-2008 version are being given a mid-life refresh, with new styling inside and out, and more efficient power units to help them go further per recharge of the tank or battery pack.
The French company’s smallest SUV has been popular with buyers, with nearly 700,000 produced since its introduction in 2019.
The facelift adds a new-look front end, with a wider grille featuring Peugeot’s new shield badge in the centre. There are different grille designs depending on trim level, while Peugeot’s latest LED light signature featuring three vertical slashes on either side has been added.
LED lights are also used at the rear, with a new look for the three-claw light signature. New badging has been added, it gets revised alloy wheel designs ranging from 16 to 18 inches in diameter, and there are new exterior paint options, too, including a black bi-tone roof for GT models.
Updated technology for the cabin
Inside, the Peugeot ‘i-Cockpit’ (characterised in the main by a small steering over which the driver views the instrumentation) has been further refined, with a new 10in digital driver’s display. This has 3D instruments in top-spec GT trim and is configurable.
The central infotainment touchscreen is a 10in unit on all models with ‘piano keys’ located beneath a pair of air vents for shortcut access to important settings. The new system includes wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, while ‘OK Peugeot’ voice control is also included.
Cabin options include Peugeot i-Connect Advanced, which adds TomTom navigation with over-the-air updates and connected services, while upgraded seat fabrics include the option of adding Alcantara trim to GT-spec models.
New mild hybrid petrol engine
In terms of engine choices, the current car’s PureTech 100 and 130 three-cylinder turbocharged petrol engines will be carried over. Both feature a six-speed manual gearbox, though an eight-speed automatic is optional with the more powerful engine.
More significantly, mild-hybrid technology joins the range in the shape of a new PureTech 136 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol engine. This adds a new six-speed dual-clutch gearbox and a 48-volt electrical system that offers a power boost at low engine speeds. Peugeot claims that with its mild hybrid system, the 2008 can run up to 50 per cent of the time in electric mode and offer fuel savings of up to 15 per cent.
More range and power for electric e-2008
The pure-electric Peugeot e-2008 improves in efficiency, performance and battery capacity compared with the outgoing version. The 54kWh pack is 4kWh larger than before, while the electric motor has 18 per cent more power, at 154bhp. Peugeot quotes a WLTP-tested range of 252 miles, a significant increase from 214 miles in the original version.
The standard 7.4kW onboard charger can take the battery from 0-80 per cent in seven and a half hours using a home wallbox, though a faster three-phase 11kW charger is available as an option, bringing down the charging time.
When away from home or work, DC rapid charging is rated at 100kW and can take the battery from 0-80 per cent capacity in as little as half an hour.
Improvements to the app
Along with these updates, Peugeot is introducing more functionality for its MyPeugeot smartphone app. A virtual maintenance book keeps a log of all work and invoices for a car, while journey directions can be decided in advance and sent to a car’s navigation system, where fitted.
For e-2008 owners, the app now shows how much predicted charge they’ll have left when they arrive at their destination.
Prices and on sale date
Prices for the updated Peugeot 2008 and e-2008 have yet to be announced, but expect a modest rise over the current line-up, which starts from £24,315 for the petrol and £35,900 for the e-2008.
Customers will be able to place orders for the new model from the summer with a choice of three trim levels, whatever features under the bonnet: Active, Allure and GT.
