New 2024 Porsche Taycan price and specification confirmed, gets 421-mile range and even faster charging
Faster on road, faster at the charger
There might be a new king of long-distance electric motoring after Porsche revealed the official details of its significantly-updated Taycan sports car, which comes with not only more power and quicker acceleration but also greatly increased range and even faster charging speeds.
On sale from today, the new Taycan is available from launch in all three bodystyles: the regular Taycan saloon, the Taycan Sport Tourismo “estate” and the jacked up, more rugged Taycan Cross Turismo, which comes with a rough road package for coping with different types of terrain. Each will be available with four-wheel drive and more performance, with range-topping Turbo S variants of all three.
The headline figure is the range of up to 421 miles per charge, which is a significant 34 per cent increase on the outgoing Taycan’s best of up to 315 miles. A larger 105kWh battery along with an upgraded rear motor and inverter, improved energy recuperation when slowing from high speeds, optimised software, revised thermal management, a next-generation heat pump, a weight saving of up to 15kg and more aerodynamically-efficient 21in wheels all contribute to the efficiency gains
While 421 miles isn’t the longest-range electric car available on sale in the UK — that title belongs to the Mercedes-Benz EQS 450+, which can manage an official 452 miles between top-ups — the Taycan is capable of recharging at higher speeds for longer, making long-distance journeys potentially more convenient.
With charging capability increasing from 270kW to 320kW, and the revised 800v electrical architecture able to draw more than 300kW for up to five minutes, all versions of the new Taycan can go from 10 to 80 per cent battery in as little as 18 minutes, according to Porsche, which compares with 37 minutes for the outgoing models.
It’s not just the charging speeds that have been increased: all versions are now quicker off the mark than before, with the entry-level Taycan completing 0-62mph in 4.8 seconds and the ludicrously-rapid Turbo S versions managing the same sprint in just 2.4 seconds — improvements of 0.6 and 0.4 seconds, respectively.
Performance is enhanced with a new push-to-pass button within the mode switch, which comes with the Sport Chrono package, that adds 70kW (94bhp) of power for up to 10 seconds at a time. The maximum power output available from the Turbo S models, when using launch control, is a wild 939bhp.
Porsche has fettled the active air suspension, too, with a new Active Ride system available for the all-wheel-drive models helping keep the Taycan level while cornering and adjusting the firmness of the ride depending on the drive mode.
While the potential to go crazy on the Porsche configurator is as easy as usual, all new Taycans come with a good level of kit as standard, including ParkAssist with reversing camera, heated front seats, the revised heat pump and new cooling system, a smartphone tray for wireless charging, electric charging ports on both the driver and front passenger sides, and Power Steering Plus as standard features.
Of course, there are styling updates that mark out the new Taycan from its predecessor, including sharper lines and new HD matrix headlights, while inside the digital screens have had a revamp and Apple Carplay is further integrated into the displays.
The new Porsche Taycan costs from £86,500 for the entry-level saloon, from £87,300 for the Taycan Sport Turismo and from £96,800 for the Taycan 4 Cross Turismo (this more rugged bodystyle understandably not coming in rear-wheel-drive form). The range-topping Turbo S versions come in at upwards of £161,400, £162,100 and £162,500 respectively.
The first customers will start receiving their cars this spring, with buyers invited to “explore the potential of the new car, and further develop their own skills behind the wheel” at the Porsche Experience Centre, Silverstone.
