SOME PEOPLE take Easy Jet, others take a cruise but Sunday Times motoring columnist Dom Joly is putting his hand where his gearstick is and driving – yes, driving – to Istanbul, 2,000 miles from his Gloucestershire home.
He won’t be alone; he’s taking his wife and children on the Joly family “carcation”, as he calls it. They left home on March 31 (perhaps the following day was tempting fate for some members of the party) and return in three weeks’ time.

“THE JOLY family are making good progress across Europe to Istanbul in our luxury Land Rover Discovery. It’s a bit like National Lampoon’s European Adventure meets a grand tour. We’ve cruised the canals of Amsterdam, been Dark Tourists in ex-Cold War central, Berlin, tramped around Prague, where I used to be a diplomat in the early 1990s, and spent a couple of days in my new favourite city, Vienna.
We have just arrived in Budapest, but sadly our passports stayed behind in Vienna. We are trying to sort this out while swimming in open air hot baths and working off the goulash.
