McLaren unveils stunning £186,000 600LT Sports Series supercar

Latest McLaren 'Long Tail' is the firm's lightest car since the Senna

THE EVER-GROWING McLaren portfolio has been fleshed out with yet another new model: the lightweight, limited-run McLaren 600LT supercar.

Based on the already exceptionally quick McLaren 570S, the 600LT is described as the most extreme and driver-focused Sports Series car that McLaren has made to date.

Though the 3.8-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine’s 29bhp increase to 592bhp (or 600hp — hence the car’s name) is modest, weight reductions make the 600LT a much wilder proposition.

With a claimed dry weight of 1,247kg, the McLaren 600LT is nearly 100kg lighter than a comparably-equipped McLaren 570S — as well as being the lightest car McLaren makes this side of the outrageous Senna.

Being a ‘Long Tail’ model, the Mclaren 600LT is also a bit longer than the 570S from which it’s derived, with the extra bodywork adding another 74mm to the vehicle’s length.

While the revised bodywork clearly pays homage to the legendary McLaren F1 GTR racing car, McLaren claims the larger rear diffuser and prominent rear wing contribute to the 600LT’s increase in downforce — though it hasn’t revealed by exactly how much.

Regardless, the McLaren 600LT’s chassis has been thoroughly optimised to cope with the extra aero demands. Extra mechanical grip comes in the form of track-inspired Pirelli P Zero Trofeo R tyes, with forged suspension components and brake bits pinched from the McLaren 720S also making their way onto the racy new McLaren.

Those interested in acquiring a £186,000 McLaren 600LT will be able to register a build slot for their car from October 2018, with first deliveries expected sometime in the new year.

Prospective buyers will need to get their order in quickly, however: McLaren will only be producing the 600LT in “strictly limited” numbers, with no more new examples being assembled after October 2019.
