The three-time Wimbledon champion, who was famous as much for his fiery temper as for his formidable forehand, jumped into the driving seat of the new Jaguar XE saloon after the two competition winners’ real chauffeur stopped the car, ostensibly to pick something up from a nearby house.
Before resuming Wimbledon commentary duties, McEnroe said: “I was very happy to be part of this creative stunt with Jaguar. This is the greatest Grand Slam of them all – both in the eyes of the players and fans – and the surprise on Tom and Nick’s faces when I got in the car shows just how excited the fans get at Wimbledon.”
The Secret Chauffeur stunt was part of Jaguar’s #FeelWimbledon campaign, which uses “sociometric, biometric and atmospheric sensors” to analyse the emotions associated with the tennis tournament.
Tom Payne and Nick Webb, the two fans involved in Secret Chauffeur, were monitored with biometric wristbands, and Jaguar says Payne’s device showed his heart rate increased by 60.3% to 93 beats per minute when McEnroe entered the car.
It continued to rise as the fans quizzed McEnroe on his thoughts about Murray’s chances of winning a second Wimbledon title, and posed for photographs with the star outside the All England Club’s famous gates.
