Dash cam scrappage scheme launched at Halfords

Is your dashboard camera fit for purpose?

YOU’VE HEARD of car scrappage schemes: now there’s a similar scheme for dash cams, allowing anyone less than impressed with the quality of their existing dashboard recording devices to upgrade for a discounted price.

The initiative, run by Halfords, allows drivers to trade in any type of dash cam or sat nav device for a 20% discount on one of the new Nextbase Series 2 dash cams, which were named Innovation of the Year at The Sunday Times Motor Awards earlier this month.

We noted the Nextbase models’ clever magnetic mounts, plug-and-play rear-view cameras (zoom, wide-angle or rear window-mounted), Alexa voice control on higher-spec models (if specified), quick file transfers to your smartphone and an Emergency SOS service that will call for an ambulance if you don’t respond following a crash.

We also praised the class-leading clarity of the video, which is all-the-more important as the days get shorter and the clocks go back.

New research by Halfords showed that 41% of those surveyed were worried about being seen by other drivers when the clocks go back, while 22% said they tired more quickly as a result of the darker nights. Nerarly a third (32%) said they would feel safer if driving with a dash cam fitted.

Daniel Tomson, Halfords’ car technology expert, said: “We’re encouraging drivers to do everything they can to prepare for darker nights and make sure that they and their vehicles are ready for the clocks going back. Poor lighting and weather conditions can make driving a hazard at this time of year, so it’s important that you’re driving with a dash cam with great night vision and crystal-clear image quality.

“We would encourage anyone shopping at Halfords to take advantage of this offer as it will help keep our roads safer and means that drivers can access the latest award-winning Nextbase models at a significantly reduced price.”

Richard Browning, Director of Nextbase, added: “As we approach some of the darkest, harshest days that this climate has to offer, we wanted to do something to help those with dash cams that are no-longer fit for purpose on UK roads.

“My hope is that the offer inspires people to take a second look at the dash cam in their vehicle and ask themselves: ‘Do I trust this to make a difference if or when the time comes to use it?’”

The scheme runs from now until the November 18 at all Halfords stores. All products traded in will be recycled at an approved electrical recycling centre, according to Nextbase.
