Spectacular rollover crash involving street racing Mercedes caught on dash cam
Jail for driver after trying to out-run the law
POLICE in Birmingham have released footage of a Mercedes driver crashing his car spectacularly following during a police pursuit.
Driver Jamil Khan, 35, was being pursued by an unmarked police car after his C-class saloon was seen racing another car away from traffic lights in Birmingham. His attempt to evade the officers’ vehicle was over soon after it began, however, as he rolled his Mercedes just outside Birmingham City Hospital after colliding with an oncoming Ford Fiesta.
The rollover crash was captured on the dash cam of a car Khan was overtaking, as well as on the in-car camera in the unmarked police car.
As the police footage shows, the officers were able to locate Khan’s Mercedes parked in Birmingham city centre shortly after his head-to-head drag race with an unidentified white BMW. Khan sped off after the police lights were switched on.
Khan was noted to have broken multiple traffic laws in his brief attempt to out-run the police. As well as driving through a red traffic light and overtaking a Volkswagen Up! on the inside at a roundabout, he also exceeded the speed limit on multiple occasions; the most egregious being a 90mph burst through a 30mph zone.
Despite not wearing a seatbelt when his Mercedes rolled over, Khan managed to survive the crash, though he had to be cut free from his wrecked car by a fire crew before being taken to the nearby hospital for a head injury.
Fortunately, the driver of the Ford Fiesta and the front seat passenger in Khan’s C-Class also survived the smash, and are said to have only sustained minor injuries.
Khan was found guilty of dangerous driving at Birmingham Crown Court on August 13 this year. He was also successfully charged with driving while disqualified and for failing to provide a blood sample for the police. Khan was sentenced to 26 months in prison and will be banned from driving for the next four years.
West Midlands Police’s PC Dan Lynas, who pursued Khan’s Mercedes in the unmarked police car, said: “This was appalling driving from Khan, who was lucky to escape from the collision that he caused with his life.
“We welcome this sentence and hope it sends a strong message to drivers who are willing to put lives at risk by driving dangerously.”
