The Ectomobile, or ECTO-1 as it became known thanks to its numberplate, was based on a 1959 Cadillac Series 75. It had what Cadillac called the commercial chassis, a reinforced and lowered platform for ambulance and hearses.

In Aykroyd and Harold Ramis’s original script the Ectomobile was able to dematerialise, but as production progressed the team realised it would be funnier without its own paranormal powers.
